I suspect that many people subconsciously realize that the ministry and message of Jesus was intended to influence and transform humanity in ways that have never been realized under the administration of the institutional church. In reading the words of Jesus, it is difficult to miss the dramatic difference he proposed in human assumptions and thinking. For the most part the church and its followers in all generations have paid lip service to Jesus’ message while silently questioning whether what He taught could ever work and become a part of human behavior in general. Out of this skepticism about the practicality of His message of love has grown all the disparate church doctrines which continue to confuse and frustrate even the most ardent church advocates.
I often hear things like this: Jesus did teach some astounding ideas and maybe they can become practical in the future, but I don’t think I’ll live to see it. Well, that line of thinking could go on forever as the self fulfilling prophecy it is. None of us are really waiting for the world to change for us. Instead we are waiting for the world to change because of us, starting with the change we decide to make in ourselves.
