I Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
What does this bold statement imply? It could mean that the only true religion is the religion of Jesus. It could mean that all of God’s work is totally completed in Jesus and I add or contribute nothing. A friend has said: I contribute nothing to my salvation except the sin that made it necessary. If I add anything to my salvation, I know more than Jesus. If I make my salvation effective by my belief, by my obedience, by my right doctrine, then I know Jesus crucified plus my part and that is not the gospel that Paul marveled at in Romans 11.
Jesus plus anything additional is not the Gospel of Paul and it is a message doomed to fail. Would angels marvel at the “Gospel” as normally taught?
See I Peter 1:12. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. What astounded the angels?
Luke 2: 10-14. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of
Did Jesus come to complete salvation or to bring the remote possibility of salvation? Either Jesus saves or Jesus and I together team up to accomplish my salvation. Either Paul knew only Jesus or he knew Jesus’ contribution plus man’s part. Which was it Paul? Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 5: 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Let’s embrace Jesus without trying to add our ability to what He has already done. The church teaches Jesus’ sacrifice plus my faith and faithfulness combine to bring my personal salvation. Jesus plus anyone else’s contribution is one element too many.
