Whenever someone thinks they can settle a religious issue by quickly quoting a few Bible verses, I wonder why they think the Bible contains 2000 pages of text. When the quoted verses involve skipping back and forth between different books, different settings, and different covenants, I really wonder about a “truth” that is supposedly related in such a haphazard manner. Why does deciphering and proving Bible essentials require stringing together minute bits of information from all over the sacred text? Is God trying to hide or expose the truth?
This proof texting approach to theological validation is just too random, and that randomness is an obvious invitation to fanciful interpretation and conclusions. If the Bible proves anything, it is that, given enough time, anyone can defend anything, using random verses.
