Those who claim an exclusive relationship with God and then demand conformity to their theology under the threat of divine punishment are simply religious bullies. They preach an egotistical God so they have an excuse to stroke their own egos at the expense of others.
Such religious posturing should be evaluated on the basis of its consequences. When a theology does little to encourage benevolence and selflessness but instead promotes divisiveness and rancor, it is rightfully rejected as counter productive in fostering real virtue. No amount of Bible quotation can ever turn that religious "sows ear" into something of value.
