According to Wikipedia, The Big Lie (German: Große Lüge) is a propaganda technique. The expression was coined by Adolf Hitler, when he dictated his 1925 book Mein Kampf, about the use of a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously." In addition to suggesting that a good lie had to be a whopper, Hitler also believed that something repeated often enough became engrained regardless of how outlandish it might initially seem.
In hearing these ideas, I have to believe that Hitler drew his conclusions on the matter of propagandizing by observing the work of the institutional church. No one has proposed and endlessly repeated a more nonsensical message than the church. No group has ever perfected the practice of endlessly repeating the same story without regard to questions, implications, and rationality. The propagation of Orthodoxy's doctrinal positions by the church has been a case study in indoctrination from day one right up to the present.
People can quite literally attend church services for their entire lives and never hear one new or original thought. To the church's advantage, their sacred text is so flexible that it is very possible to support any imaginable position from isolated portions of scripture. What is preposterous always finds an appropriate proof text. Thus the Big Lie can be made nothing less than Divine Truth, with scripture to prove it.
