The church has tried to divorce itself from personal virtue in order to pursue politically their idea of national righteousness based on the Old Testament. In the process they have actively participated in the nastiness and dishonesty of the Trump administration and debased the image of Christianity immeasurably.
If virtue, integrity, and civility cannot be the means to an end, the church has no business in that business. No matter what some national religious leader may say to the contrary, virtue is always the proper measure of both ends and means. Unrighteousness does not enhance righteousness, personally or nationally.
If the church wants to adhere so tightly to the Old Testament they might pay attention to Isaiah 5:20- Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
