Declaring the God of Unconditional Love

is god on an ego trip?

Too much of Christian Orthodoxy involves trying to convince mankind that God has an ego problem and mankind is obliged to stroke that ego, by conformity, obedience, subservience, and worship. God demands, and we must comply.

God is jealous. God is angry. God threatens. God hates. God condemns. Somehow God is sold as a compendium of the worst of human behaviors. He is an emotional basket case armed with weapons of mass destruction.

There is absolutely no wonder that many, many people find this "god" unbearable. What's to like about any of this, unless you are into sadism? If God can't or won't act majestically, then how could anyone respect and honor Him. Some might be motivated to accept such a "god" out of abject fear, but real respect and attention require something else entirely.

To totally reject this whole picture of God is an essential step toward religious sanity. Whatever that takes it is completely justified. To the extent that our understanding of God mirrors the worst aspects of humanity, we become our own de facto "god".
