Membership in an organization where one can draw strength from others and associate together in acts of caring and benevolence has a great appeal to any number of people. The joy associated with being a part of a community is an inherent part of our spiritual nature. This is the reason why the institutional church survives despite its doctrinal intransigence and appalling theology. Many members are simply able to ignore what they don't really believe and take from the church what they actually find beneficial in their daily lives. Such members may mouth the tenets of Orthodoxy but you can be certain they don't actually embrace them. The near total lack of evangelical zeal, even in the most ardently fundamentalist groups, is vivid evidence of this reality.
