I saw a sign recently which said something to this effect- Anyone who makes it to heaven gets there by travelling through hell. That is not quite the traditional understanding of how things work. An intriguing idea - It’s not heaven or hell but both as part of the life process. Of course, we are not talking about locations here but rather conditions or states of mind.
One can see from this declaration that the idea of heaven and hell can have a very different, nuanced meaning, nothing like the interpretation that the institutional church is so fond of selling. This is just one more example of how Orthodoxy’s dogmatic, one size fits all biblical understanding is a vast over simplification of a complex, symbolic, and often paradoxical text.
